The finishing touches: by Devi Laskar

“red-letter day turning orange” by devi laskar

Another night followed by another day and NaNoWriMo will be finished for 2012. If you are feeling stuck, and need a little boost to get you to your word count or help you achieve your personal goal during November, try something from the list below – and push forward! You only have a day to go before the finish line:

  1. Revisit Angie Powers’ amazing exercise about shame and sketchy characters at https://bookwritingworld.com/2012/11/sketchy-characters/.
  2. Use the word “understand” in two different ways in a short dialogue between two characters who are lost and at a crossroad.
  3. Set the timer on your microwave for 10 minutes and write down as many action verbs as you can: then use them in your prose for today. I’ll get you started:  add, allow, call, chase, drop, escape, grab, hang, itch, kick, march, name, obey, promise, question…..
  4. take a minute to brainstorm about the last scene you’ve written, and re-think it from the point of view of your antagonist, rather than your protagonist. What does your villain want? And why is she happy or unhappy about what has just happened?
  5. Pretend you’ve just received a postcard from your protagonist. Describe it. What is the illustration? A photograph? Of where? And what are the few words scrawled in blue-black ink on the reverse side. How is it signed? And how are you addressed?
