Here’s a shout-out to three things that have inspired me to keep writing this week (and made me laugh, too):
- The History of English in Ten Minutes!
This fantastic cartoon goes through the evolution of the English language, where “we” borrowed and stole, and how and why we use English the way we do. Excellent entertainment. Only 10 minutes.
2. Two Ways to Think About Nothing by Robert Krulwich!
Mr. Krulwich writes the NPR science blog and this week has written a fascinating article about nothing and “empty spaces in space” as well as American artist Robert Rauschenberg and how he erased a drawing of the famous Willem de Kooning to, well, create a space. 🙂
3. How to Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon!
Mr. Kleon is my hero this week, he’s a writer who draws! He’s the author of Newspaper Blackout, a best-selling book of poetry made by redacting newspaper articles with a permanent marker. His latest book is Steal Like An Artist — a creative manifesto based on 10 things he wish he’d heard when he was starting out. Enclosed is his comparative list: “Good theft vs. Bad theft.”
Who and what have inspired you this week to keep writing?
Devi Laskar is a founding member of the Book Writing World. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University, is a rabid Tar Heel basketball fan and will be reading some of her work on April 9 at the Sacramento Poetry Center in CA.
