Michelle Richmond’s Secrets: Our Video Interview on the Writing Life

Michelle Richmond is a wonderful writer, and you can tell just hanging out with her that she, like Charlotte, is also a good friend. In any case, she was so much fun to talk with we didn’t want to leave. Plus her books are the kind you can’t put down. I remember tearing through The Year of Fog with two tiny babies demanding my attention–and I couldn’t stop reading! That’s a handy skill to have as a writer in these days of short attention spans and overly crowded channels of communication.

We sat down with Michelle Richmond just days after she’s turned in her latest novel to her editor, and we chatted about keeping up momentum, developing craft mastery and balancing writing and marketing. In the Book Writing World school, we are looking forward to a live chat with Michelle Richmond on Sept. 16. Sense we have quite a few moms who write, Michelle’s take on that was interesting, too.

  1. This is a fun, informative video about living he writing life. I am a dabbler in writing as a hobby (I’m being charitable here 🙂 – and I like to hear about how about how she puts her novels together – from fragments, short stories, etc, how the novels evolve (I was surprised that Richmond herself had to solve the mystery in NO ONE YOU KNOW, though I’ve heard that some writers write that way, instead of plotting everything out before writing).. But I also like hearing about the practical things that come up – the part of the house where the wi-fi doesn’t quite work, the talismans, scheduling around her son’s schedule, etc. There’s also a lot of information about navigating the process of publication and things that perhaps grad students, budding writers might find useful

I had the pleasure of taking a one-day writing class from Michelle a few months back – it was such an fun, fascinating experience. If she were to return to teaching, I’d love to take a longer-form class from her!
