G Is For Grapple: An Impractical Alphabet For Writers

Nothing in this project is about Know with its secret K or Proselytize with its gristle and fake grin. This is guess work and wrestling, fierce wonder where the answers matter and you haven’t got them.

That’s why it’s hard. Not the dishes and the salaried job and the demands of loved ones. Those squeeze time, sure, but this grappling takes everything you’ve got and puts it in a knapsack called, “Start Here,” and commands that you hike on, searching. There is no map. Miles and years later, it will turn out the map was the thing you were drawing for someone else, the reason you took the unmarked trail, the not-yet-a-path, the way with boulders to be scaled and raging rivers to be forged and cities with dark corners to wander and your own invisible, tender-to-the-touch stories whispering fiercely in your ear in a foreign tongue you still have to learn.

If you’re feeling baffled, lost, full of uncertainty and doubt, you’re probably at the trailhead (the place where one day you’ll mark it, though it doesn’t yet exist). Take it, a first unguarded step onto a ground that might sink or rise up or explode. The point is to see what happens, to follow your not knowing as far as you can, to find out.
