Early Enrollment Open to BWW Inner Circle (That’s You)

I don’t really market my classes and I don’t actually have a huge mailing list. What I have are devoted students who keep taking my classes because we do magic together–and part of that magic is that we’ve created a strong, beautiful writing community. Part of the magic is that because we grow by word of mouth and because we nurture each person’s individual brand of genius, we have classes filled with incredible talent, wonderful voices. Anyway, point is, I always only have a few spots left–and I want to go to you before I go to Facebook and the rest, and just say: Is it time for you to say yes to creativity, productivity, craft, community, your writing dream? Only you know, but if you suspect the answer is yes, come check out the offerings:

Oh, and remember how I said it’s not open to the public yet? You’ll need a password once you go to register. It’s: spring2016

In a couple of days, registration will be open to everyone, so please wait until the weekend to share this. If you’ve been hanging with me, reading the newsletter, maybe you took a free class or maybe you used to be enrolled, I’m giving you first chance to grab one of the few openings that remain. Question? Hit reply and email me! I’m happy to answer them.

Words are our medium, I used to say. All right, but details are our pigment, then and lines, the brush strokes . . . Gestures, action, description. Writers create image out of words. The juxtaposition of images (including actions, setting, gestures, dialog) creates story. Feed your writing by staying awake to the details in the world around you and to the way your mood culls them, curates them. Robert Olen Butler calls this “sensate selection.” The fringe of rug pushed up against my great-grandmother’s wooden letter desk. Charlie rolling around beside me on the couch, filling me in on his dream. The flow of ink from this pen as I write these words. I share these with you and now you are beside me, this morning. The magic is in the detail. It creates worlds.

Story Makers Show: In this honest conversation with Meredith Maran, prolific memoirist, book reviewer, novelist and editor of the newly released Why We Write About Ourselves, we dive into the risks of writing a memoir whose story you are still living. “I’ve never learned anything in a classroom in my whole life, so writing my experience is the best way for me to learn.” – Meredith Maran
