day 16 of MyNaPoWriMo (Write a poem a day for a month!)

“Self-Portrait with cropped hair”

She wished she could distract him
from the others, their perfumes

permeating the air, infecting
everything she touched or ate or drank;

she wished she could wash away their dirt
from her own skin; she knew he admired

her fierce eyes, the country within her,
the way her hair swayed like a curtain

in the evening breeze; so she killed
the thing he loved and her shears

became the weapon; the hair cropped
as close as a soldier’s and her waves

just a disparate pile of snakes
wriggling and writhing on the ground.
I am also doing a "365 day art challenge" (I'm currently on day 147)) and I
was looking up something in my art dictionary when I came across an entry
for Frida Kahlo and her painting "self-portrait with cropped hair"
and it spoke briefly about her stormy relationship with the painter
Diego Rivera.
