Last week we went down to Cayucos, a small town north of Hearst Castle. We went for our annual get together with my SIL and BIL to watch the waves, write, play cribbage and walk on the beach. One of the methods I use to get my head in gear is to write metaphors or similes and try to bring in all the senses.
Always forget what they are so I have a cheat sheet in my writing book. (See, Hear, Feel, Taste and Smell).
These are from Morro Bay State Park, down the road from Cayucos:
*The white egret opened its wings, a 747 take off over the marsh.
*A family of ducklings hovers together as the family they were meant to be.
*The eucalyptus covers our picnic bench with nose candy and shade.
*The mottled beach has a bad case of acne.
*The geese gather to gossip and squawk like gossiping teens.
*The flying formation of geese resembles a grand march with one playbill.
Bree LeMaire lives in San Francisco. She is a founding member of the Book and is working on her second mystery novel, Murder in the Rehab Unit or just plain Rehab. When she talks of writing she says, “I have to get back into Rehab,” for incentive.
Bree, I love these. I really like the acne one, and the nose candy and…. well, I love ’em all.
