Saving the date

As writers, we sometimes struggle with creating “an inner life” or a range of emotions for our central characters. In an effort to have stories that reflect realistic people with actual problems, we as writers could inflict our obligations and inconveniences on our characters.

In a recent Book Writing World mentoring class, Elizabeth instigated an exercise that was very helpful in providing depth of character (or lack thereof) for our protagonists:

Think about certain markers–holidays, New Year’s, birthdays, anniversaries–and your character. How does your character react to these days? Either complete a free write about all of the above, or pick a particular day/moment and write a scene.

What special holiday or occasion will you choose?
