What Writers Need to Know About Body Language: to Wow an Audience at Your Reading or to Nail Dialog in Your Book

Aug 30, 2010 | Featured, Publish and Promote

“Words are only a small part of communication,” Sharon Sayler writes in her new book What Your Body Says (and how to master the message). This may not be good news for writers; after all, words are our medium. And words on the page have to do a great deal without the help of non-verbal cues. Of course, inserting descriptions of non-verbal cues into dialog is an important part of crafting strong fiction, but that’s another blog. “Your non-verbals,” Sayler writes, “can actually destroy or produce the results you want.” For writers on the page, this may be advice we wish to ignore, but when we take the stage, knowing how to present ourselves–and our work–could make a real difference to our success. These days, writers have to promote their own work–through readings, media appearances, videos and, well, any way they can think of to do so. Sayler, a marketing expert and a member of the Book Writing World who has been both traditionally published and self-published in non-fiction will be joining Anjuelle Floyd, a dynamo who has also been both traditionally- and self-published in fiction, for a Sept. 11, 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. event to discuss the range of publishing options and how they impact a writer’s need to market his or her own work.

How to Wow Your Audience When You Read Your Work.

But first, on Thursday, Sept. 2, 6:05 p.m. – 7 p.m. Pacific Time (9:05 – 10 p.m. Eastern), Sayler will lead a presentation and discussion of how to apply her body language know-how to our public work as writers–which is to say as readers and discussants of our own work.  This event is open to the public. ——————————————————-
